Meniere’s Disease

ear vestibular system
What is Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s disease is relatively rare form of vertigo that involves episodic vertigo with fluctuating hearing loss coinciding with the vertigo, pressure and ringing in the ear. Although hearing improves after an attack, over time baseline hearing becomes worse and can burn out altogether. It is said to be medically incurable. In the past Meniere’s disease was way over diagnosed and probably still is today.

Do Medical Treatments Work?

Hung et al. and many others admit that the medical treatments don’t work but go on to recommend them anyway. “Despite the variety of regimens used to date none have shown the ability to prevent symptoms in well-controlled studies.” These treatments include diuretics, low salt diets, and limiting sugar, monosodium glutamate, caffeine, and/or alcohol . Curiously, when it comes to recommending treatments Thai-Van states, ”Immediately after the acute phase…. a diuretic should be started at a low dose.” And again from the recommendations: ”A low salt diet is recommended, as well as avoidance of CATS (coffee, alcohol, tobacco and stress).

M.A. Thorp et al. reviewed ten years of publications on Meniere’s disease. They concluded that evidence-based studies were lacking, yet the treatments are performed anyway. At the same time doctors routinely knock craniosacral therapy for being an unproven therapy!

The Facts about Craniosacral Therapy

craniosacral therapy

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive technique that adjusts structural restrictions in the bones of the skull to restore normal cranial bone movement and vestibular function without drugs, diets, surgery, chemo-surgery, or vestibular rehabilitation.

Craniosacral therapy has worked just as well with clients suffering from Meniere’s symptoms as it does with straight out vertigo and requires the same treatment.
Craniosacral vertigo occurs when the temporal bones, the bones on either side of the head to which our ears attached and in which the balance organs reside are moving in erratically causing a disturbance of the fluid movement in the semi-circular canals, the organs responsible for monitoring rotational movement. Cranial bone restrictions can also cause pressure on numerous blood vessels and nerves leading to other symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty concentrating, nausea, difficulty swallowing or facial pain.

Unnecessary Surgery Averted

I once saw a man diagnosed with Meniere’s disease who was considering what kind of destructive surgery to have in his inner ear, vestibular nerve section (severing the balance nerve), endolymphatic sac surgery, or a complete labyrinthectomy. Labyrinthectomy is only used if there is already severe hearing loss as it destroys all balance and hearing in that ear. This surgery removes the entire inner ear on one side, thus destroying all balance on that side of the head which requires vestibular rehabilitation to learn how to balance with only one set of balance organs.
Within 3 sessions he was completely free of vertigo and never came back. PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE, do not accept any kind of surgery or chemo-surgery (e.g. gentimicin pills or injections which do nothing more than kill off balance nerve cells to reduce the vertigo) before you have seen a qualified craniosacral therapist to see if CST will work for you.
